Vegan Hotels Newfoundland and Labrador compares five stays with credible plant-based dining evidence across St. John’s, Fogo Island, Gros Morne, Bay Bulls and Twillingate. The range includes a modern city hotel, two exceptional destination inns and two small coastal bed-and-breakfasts.

No property in this guide is fully vegan or vegetarian. Several menus are seasonal and remote kitchens depend on advance planning, so declare the diet when booking and reconfirm every included meal, ingredient and cross-contact procedure before travel.

HOTEL 01 · VEGAN-FRIENDLY

Alt Hotel St. John’s

The best walkable St. John’s base in this comparison, with a sustainability-led building and some vegan choices at Terre.

Alt Hotel St. John’s is on Water Street, facing the harbour in the compact Downtown core. Restaurants, shops and the working waterfront are outside, while Signal Hill, The Rooms and colourful residential streets are accessible on foot or by a short ride. Harbour-view rooms suit a car-free opening or final night.

The hotel and its on-site Terre Restaurant confirm vegetarian and some vegan options. Terre’s menu changes frequently with local supply, so fixed dishes should not be promised from an older menu. Contact the restaurant before arrival to identify the current plant-based dinner and ask the hotel what vegan breakfast can be provided at Terre Café.

This is a menu-rotation choice rather than a dedicated vegan programme. It works best for flexible diners who also want access to the wider Downtown restaurant scene.

  • Classification: Vegan-friendly; conventional city hotel with a seasonal mixed restaurant.
  • Vegan highlight: Vegan options explicitly acknowledged by Terre, with dishes changing according to season and supply.
  • Location: 125 Water Street, Downtown St. John’s; on the harbour and useful for Signal Hill and The Rooms.
  • Sustainability: Four Green Keys, geothermal systems, heat recovery, efficient lighting, EV charging and an on-site garden with 32 plant varieties.
  • Best for: Car-free city stays, harbour views, design and travellers who want several off-site restaurants nearby.

HOTEL 02 · CUSTOM VEGAN FULL BOARD

Fogo Island Inn

An extraordinary remote stay where all meals are included and dietary requirements can be built into a personalised itinerary.

Fogo Island Inn rises above the Atlantic at Joe Batt’s Arm on Fogo Island. Its 29 rooms, contemporary architecture, local hosts and island-based experiences make the journey the purpose of the stay. Guests normally travel via the ferry from Farewell and should plan connections, weather flexibility and the current minimum-stay requirement carefully.

Rates include breakfast, lunch, supper, daybreak, snacks and refreshments, and the inn asks guests to share dietary requirements so its culinary team can accommodate them. Independent vegan guest reports have described separate plant-based preparations, but menus are highly seasonal and should not be treated as fixed. Request a fully vegan meal plan before paying the deposit and ask the team to confirm how every included course will be handled.

The property uses mixed kitchens and celebrates Newfoundland seafood and other regional animal products. Its strength is attentive customisation, not a permanent vegan restaurant menu.

  • Classification: Custom vegan full board; luxury inn with mixed kitchens and advance dietary planning.
  • Vegan highlight: All daily meals and snacks are included and can be coordinated around a declared vegan diet.
  • Location: Joe Batt’s Arm, Fogo Island; remote Atlantic setting reached via ferry and onward road transfer.
  • Sustainability: Solar thermal panels, hydroelectric power, a 40,000-litre rainwater cistern, carbon offsets, extensive Newfoundland sourcing and a community-ownership model that reinvests operating surplus.
  • Best for: A once-in-a-lifetime journey, architecture, slow travel, creative retreats and guests able to plan meals far ahead.

HOTEL 03 · VEGAN-FRIENDLY FOR DINNER

Gros Morne Inn

A small sustainable inn near the Tablelands with an explicitly vegan beet risotto on its current dinner menu.

Gros Morne Inn is in Shoal Brook near Woody Point, on the south side of Gros Morne National Park. Its 15 rooms are a useful base for the Tablelands, Trout River and Bonne Bay, with a quieter feel than larger park gateways. A car is essential for most hikes and viewpoints.

The on-site restaurant’s current dinner menu marks Beet Risotto vegan; it is served with tofu and vegan cheese. A salad can also be prepared vegan. Public breakfast information does not identify a guaranteed cooked vegan dish, so ask whether oatmeal, cereal, plant milk, toast and fruit can be arranged. The restaurant does not serve lunch and dinner reservations are important in the short operating season.

Because the inn is small and seasonal, confirm opening dates, dining nights and the risotto before booking. This is strongest as a dinner-led park base rather than an all-day vegan food destination.

  • Classification: Vegan-friendly for dinner; small seasonal inn with a mixed kitchen.
  • Vegan highlight: A fixed vegan beet risotto with tofu and vegan cheese, plus a vegan salad option.
  • Location: Shoal Brook near Woody Point; convenient for the Tablelands and south-side Gros Morne trails.
  • Sustainability: GreenStep Gold rating, Ocean Wise participation, composting, reduced single-use plastics, hydro and heat-pump energy, reuse systems and e-bike availability.
  • Best for: Hiking, geology, nature-focused road trips and travellers who want a clear vegan dinner near the park.

HOTEL 04 · VEGAN MEALS WITH ADVANCE NOTICE

Bread & Cheese Country Inn

A small ocean-view inn on the Irish Loop with vegan breakfast availability and a chef-led set dinner that accommodates vegan diners.

Bread & Cheese Country Inn is in Bay Bulls, roughly 30 minutes south of St. John’s. It is well placed for whale and puffin cruises, the East Coast Trail and an Irish Loop road trip. The intimate rooms and sea views suit couples and travellers who want a coastal base without driving deep into the province.

Booking.com currently lists vegan breakfast availability. The inn’s La Roca dining experience serves a changing four-or-more-course set menu and says it can accommodate vegan diners with advance notice. Because there is no broad à-la-carte choice, communicate the diet at reservation time and obtain confirmation that the full set menu—not only one course—will be plant-based.

La Roca operates on selected dates and reservations are separate from the room. Confirm dinner availability, breakfast ingredients and cross-contact before finalising the stay.

  • Classification: Vegan meals with advance notice; small inn and mixed chef-led kitchen.
  • Vegan highlight: Vegan breakfast listed on Booking.com and a multi-course set dinner adaptable for vegan guests.
  • Location: Bay Bulls on the Avalon Peninsula; about 30 minutes from St. John’s and close to the East Coast Trail.
  • Sustainability: Efficient construction, smart thermostats, LED lighting, local and organic sourcing, phosphate-free and scent-free laundry practices and an stated zero-waste ambition.
  • Best for: Whale-watching, coastal walks, couples and a short Irish Loop stay.

HOTEL 05 · VEGAN BREAKFAST ON REQUEST

Applewood Inn B&B

A historic Twillingate bed-and-breakfast with vegan breakfast listed, best confirmed in detail before the short summer season.

Applewood Inn occupies a 1918 home in Twillingate, one of Newfoundland’s best-known Iceberg Alley communities. It is a natural stop for boat trips, coastal trails, museums and viewpoints, and typically operates seasonally from early May to early October.

Booking.com lists vegan among the available breakfast formats, and the local tourism organisation identifies plant-based food availability. The inn’s own site describes homemade pastries and preserves but does not publish the exact vegan breakfast. Contact the host before booking to confirm plant milk, bread or pastry ingredients, spreads and the cooked component.

The kitchen is mixed and the small property may need time to source substitutions. Treat the breakfast as an advance arrangement, not a permanent vegan buffet.

  • Classification: Vegan breakfast on request; seasonal mixed-kitchen bed-and-breakfast.
  • Vegan highlight: Vegan breakfast listed on Booking.com and plant-based availability recognised by the local destination organisation.
  • Location: Twillingate, on Newfoundland’s north coast; suited to Iceberg Alley and coastal touring.
  • Sustainability: Adaptive reuse of a 1918 home and line-dried linens are documented; no current third-party environmental certification was found.
  • Best for: Iceberg season, small-inn character, local hosting and a north-coast road trip.
