Six stops for an early breakfast, plant-based brunch, Mexican street food, Asian-inspired dishes and South Side soul food — with menus, clear kitchen labels and location previews.

Five of these businesses describe their food as fully vegan or entirely plant-based. The Chicago Diner is vegetarian with vegan choices, not a fully vegan kitchen. Each profile uses a specific Chicago address rather than mixing different branches.

Plant-based soul food on the South Side

The Chicago Diner — Lakeview

Lakeview · North Halsted Street

Vegetarian · vegan optionsDaily brunchDiner comfort food

A meat-free diner with a clear vegan ordering route

The Chicago Diner combines vegan and vegetarian comfort food. Its operator highlights plant-based pancakes, biscuits and gravy, cinnamon rolls and other brunch dishes, but also lists egg choices. That distinction matters: meat-free does not mean every possible order is vegan.

How to order vegan:Request the vegan preparation, choosing tofu rather than eggs wherever alternatives are offered. Confirm the whole plate and accompaniments. Brunch is served daily until 3:00 pm; use the current Lakeview waitlist rather than assuming a reservation has been made.

Vegan breakfast and brunch in Chicago

An earlier morning

Fancy Plants Cafe publishes an 8:00 am opening and lists savory breakfast food. It is the first stop to compare in this shortlist when you need a meal before the later brunch restaurants open.

A longer brunch

Kale My Name's dedicated brunch menu runs Friday–Sunday. The Chicago Diner serves brunch daily until 3:00 pm, but its vegetarian kitchen requires a specifically vegan order where alternatives are offered.

Check service days as well as opening times. A kitchen open for dinner is not automatically an early breakfast option, and a rotating cafe menu does not guarantee every pastry will be available.

Plan your Chicago food stops

Build around a neighborhood

Fancy Plants and The Chicago Diner both give you Lakeview options. The other profiles span River North, Albany Park, Edgewater and Chatham. Choose stops around your day's plans instead of treating all six as one walking route.

Check the branch and service

Match directions to the address in the card, especially for Penelope's and Alice & Friends. Read kitchen cutoffs and confirm uncertain hours before a special trip. A published schedule is not a live table-availability check.

Research notes and image credit

Operator websites, location pages and published menus were checked on September 18, 2026. Sources appear beside each profile. Penelope's full weekly River North schedule was not available in the accessible page; Soul Veg City's own page gives conflicting Monday–Tuesday hours. Those limitations are stated rather than filled with estimates. This guide does not claim personal visits, tastings, review scores or live reservations.

Vegan labeling is not an allergy or cross-contact guarantee. Discuss ingredient and preparation requirements with the restaurant. Opening hours, menus, prices and availability can change after the source-check date.
