Sri Lanka city and countryside guide · research checked 13 September 2026

Searching for vegan hotels in Kandy? First decide whether you want a city base or a retreat in the surrounding countryside. This guide compares Tree of Life Nature Resort in Yahalathenna, Radisson Hotel Kandy on Saranankara Road and Santani Wellness Kandy in Werapitiya. Their food evidence differs as much as their locations: named vegan cuisine, a dietary-enquiry candidate and personalised dining with an operator reference to vegan meals.

Which Kandy stay should you enquire about first?

Tree of Life's Ayu restaurant explicitly mentions vegan cuisine. Santani describes vegan meals in its own published material and offers a personalised dining format. Radisson is the city-hotel alternative, but its vegetarian and dietary-request information does not establish vegan preparation. None of these properties is presented as completely vegan. Not three hotels beside Kandy Lake: Tree of Life and Santani are countryside alternatives outside central Kandy. Santani's address is in Werapitiya, near Theldeniya; do not confuse it with the company's Colombo office. Compare transfers, meals and the time you plan to spend at the property before choosing a rate.

Three stay formats at a glance

Choose the setting that fits your days

For a city-focused visit

Radisson lists 31 Saranankara Road and offers a city base with a rooftop pool. Its accommodation categories distinguish ordinary rooms from lake-view options. Our suggestion is to start with this format when your priority is time around Kandy rather than time at a rural retreat, provided the kitchen confirms suitable food. [K4]

For a nature-resort stay in Yahalathenna

Tree of Life gives Yahalathenna as its address and presents a nature-resort setting with different accommodation formats. It is an alternative to staying in the city, not another lakeside address. Agree arrival and town outings from the confirmed property location. [K2]

For a longer countryside pause

Santani's resort address is Aratenna Estate, Werapitiya. Its directions describe a route through Theldeniya, with a further rural section to reach the property. Treat the journey as part of choosing a retreat, not as a short walk back from Kandy's sights. No fixed transfer duration is promised here. [K8]

Hotels and retreats for a plant-based stay

Stay 01 · Vegan cuisine at a named restaurant

Tree of Life Nature Resort

Location: Yahalathenna, outside central Kandy
Best fit: a countryside resort with a specific vegan-dining enquiry

The operator identifies Ayu Restaurant, near its wellness centre, as serving vegan and vegetarian cuisine. That is the clearest named-venue food statement in this comparison. The same page describes Sithuvili as a separate buffet restaurant, so do not assume the Ayu offer automatically describes an ordinary breakfast-inclusive booking. [K1]

Ask whether Ayu is available to guests on your selected room rate, which meals it serves during your stay and whether reservations or a particular package are needed. Request a complete breakfast and dinner proposal rather than relying on a general wellness label.

The resort offers different accommodation formats in a green setting. Choose the room or bungalow on its actual space and access arrangements, and decide how much time you intend to spend on site. A nature-resort stay serves a different purpose from a city hotel chosen for frequent evenings out. [K2]

Our suggested approach is to arrange the first dinner and the next morning's breakfast before arrival. For several nights, ask how the menu varies. Keep the food agreement separate from any optional treatment or activity; this article evaluates published meal information, not therapeutic benefits.

Food basis: explicit vegan cuisine at Ayu, within a property that also has other dining arrangements. Confirm access, actual meals and supplements. Neither the entire resort nor every buffet dish is represented as vegan.

Stay 02 · City hotel · vegan confirmation required

Radisson Hotel Kandy

Location: Saranankara Road, Kandy
Best fit to investigate: a city stay once breakfast and main meals are agreed

The hotel's breakfast information lists vegetarian and lactose-free options, while its Dine restaurant offers a route to discuss dietary requirements. Those are useful starting points, but neither statement confirms a complete vegan meal. In particular, lactose-free food may still contain other animal ingredients. [K3]

This distinction matters when comparing the two city guides: Radisson Colombo's vegan-options label does not automatically apply to Radisson Kandy. Ask this hotel's own kitchen to send the current dishes it can prepare, rather than transferring an assurance between properties in the same chain.

Radisson's rooftop pool, fitness facilities and different room categories make it the conventional city-hotel option here. Check whether you are reserving a lake-view room rather than assuming that every room matches a scenic promotional photograph. [K4]

For a sightseeing-led stay, a reliable breakfast may be more useful than a broad dining package. Request suitable bread or another filling accompaniment, a substantial savoury option and the drink you prefer. Discuss dinner separately, including any notice and charges. Keep the reservation flexible while those essentials remain unresolved.

Food basis: vegetarian and dietary-request information, not confirmed vegan preparation. This is a conditional accommodation candidate; a specific kitchen reply is needed before relying on included meals.

Stay 03 · Personalised dining · countryside retreat

Santani Wellness Kandy

Location: Aratenna Estate, Werapitiya, near Theldeniya
Best fit: time at a rural retreat with meals arranged before arrival

Santani's own published article about its Kandy retreat explicitly includes vegan meals alongside seafood offerings. Its dining information describes a personalised approach rather than one fixed printed menu for all guests. That combination supports an advance vegan enquiry, not a claim that the kitchen or property is entirely vegan. [K5] [K6]

Explain your vegan requirements as a firm ingredient preference, not simply a request for “wellness food”. Ask what breakfast, lunch and dinner would look like on your selected stay, which meals are included and whether the proposed arrangements depend on a particular programme. A personalised concept still needs a clear practical agreement.

The resort distinguishes mountain-view and garden-view chalet formats and also presents villa accommodation. Match the actual category to your party and access needs. Its Werapitiya setting is the key geographic distinction: choose it for time in the countryside, not as a convenient hotel beside Kandy Lake. [K7] [K8]

Our suggestion is to group city visits rather than build a retreat around repeated returns to Kandy. Confirm the arrival transfer, any meal after a late journey and your departure-day food. Assess optional activities separately from the room and dining price.

Food basis: an explicit operator reference to vegan meals and a separately described personalised dining format. The exact vegan menu for your dates and rate has not been confirmed by this guide. No health outcome or whole-property vegan status is claimed.

Agree the meals as carefully as the setting

Three useful checks

Food: request a substantial breakfast and the other meals you plan to eat on site. Specify fish, dried fish, seafood, stock, dairy, ghee, butter, eggs and honey; check sauces and accompaniments.

Access: ask which restaurant serves your agreed dishes and whether an ordinary room booking gives access to that service.

Inclusions: record reservations, notice periods, supplements and the meals covered on arrival and departure days. A retreat or full-board label does not settle those details.

A message for your host

We eat vegan, without meat, fish, dried fish, seafood, animal stock, dairy, ghee, butter, eggs or honey. Please describe a complete breakfast and the other meals available for our dates. Which venue serves them, does our selected rate include access, and are advance notice, reservations or supplements required? Please confirm the exact arrival address and transfer arrangements.

A city visit or a retreat: plan them differently

For a city-based stay, our editorial suggestion is to leave one part of the day for Kandy's lake area and cultural sights, with time to return without rushing a meal. Radisson's own destination information names the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Peradeniya Botanical Gardens among the area's attractions. Check access and opening arrangements separately. [K4]

For Tree of Life or Santani, decide how many days you want to spend mostly at the accommodation. Plan town visits as distinct outings, and avoid paying for included lunches you expect to miss. A slower stay with agreed meals may be a better fit than a schedule built around constant transfers.

Before an onward journey, arrange food at the time you will actually need it. A packed breakfast or earlier service is not assumed here. Transport schedules, travel times and attraction tickets are outside this hotel's food research.

Vegan hotels in Kandy: FAQ

Are these three properties entirely vegan?

No. Tree of Life publishes vegan cuisine at a particular restaurant, Santani describes vegan meals within personalised mixed-diet dining, and Radisson Kandy requires vegan confirmation. The guide does not certify the rooms, toiletries or every kitchen ingredient.

Which restaurant explicitly mentions vegan cuisine?

Ayu at Tree of Life does so on the resort's own dining page. Confirm access and meal inclusions for your booking; the separate Sithuvili buffet is not automatically covered by that statement. [K1]

Is Radisson Hotel Kandy confirmed vegan-friendly?

Not as a complete current vegan meal arrangement by this research. Its vegetarian and dietary-request information is not the same as Colombo's explicit vegan-options label. Ask the Kandy kitchen for named dishes. [K3]

Does Santani have a fixed vegan menu?

The operator describes personalised dining instead of one printed menu for everyone, and separately mentions vegan meals in its own retreat material. Agree your particular meals and inclusions before booking. [K5] [K6]

Are Tree of Life and Santani in central Kandy?

No. Tree of Life is in Yahalathenna, and Santani is at Werapitiya near Theldeniya. The guide includes them as countryside alternatives, with their locations clearly distinguished from the city-hotel option.

Does a wellness or full-board package guarantee vegan food?

No. Ask which meals and restaurants are included and specify your ingredient requirements. Keep the accommodation, food and optional activities separate when comparing packages. A wellness description is not itself evidence of vegan preparation.
