Sri Lanka regional guide · research checked 13 September 2026

Looking for vegan hotels on Sri Lanka’s south coast? This guide compares three different ways to stay around Mirissa, Weligama and Unawatuna: THE SLOW Vegan Hotel, Green Peace Inn’s scheduled retreats, and overnight rooms at Sri Yoga Shala. The important choice is not simply which beach you prefer, but whether you want an independent hotel stay, a structured residential programme or accommodation with a plant-based breakfast.

Which south-coast stay should you shortlist?

THE SLOW is the clearest hotel-and-vegan-restaurant choice. Green Peace Inn suits travellers seeking a scheduled eight-day retreat with vegan catering. Sri Yoga Shala offers nightly accommodation and plant-based food at Café Durga, but its published café menu also lists eggs: it is not presented here as an entirely vegan kitchen. [S1] [S2] [S4] [S5]

Regional scope: these are separate bases along the south coast. Sri Yoga Shala is inland at Metaramba near Unawatuna, not directly on the beach. A retreat place, a room reservation and a restaurant table are different bookings.

Disclosure: Booking.com buttons are affiliate links. A qualifying reservation may earn Vegan Lifestyle a commission at no extra cost to you. THE SLOW’s property link is taken from its operator website; the Sri Yoga Shala button is a labelled accommodation-name search. Green Peace Inn links to the operator’s retreat information because a room-search result would not establish a place on that programme.

Three places, three booking formats

Choose the location and the pace

Mirissa: an independent beach-hotel stay

THE SLOW identifies its setting directly on a Mirissa surf beach. It is the option to compare when you want a hotel room and freedom to organise your own days, with a vegan restaurant on site. A beachfront setting does not establish safe swimming conditions or guarantee that every room has the same balcony. [S1]

Weligama: stay for the retreat

Green Peace Inn is at 57 Matara Road, Weligama. Its advertised stay follows a group programme rather than an unrestricted hotel itinerary. Decide whether you want that structure before planning excursions that would conflict with the sessions or meal times. [S2] [S3]

Unawatuna area: a quieter inland base

Sri Yoga Shala gives its address as Durage Watta, Metaramba, Unawatuna, and places itself approximately 1.5 kilometres inland from Wijaya Beach. Book it as a green, inland setting with access to the wider Galle–Unawatuna area, not as a room on the sand. [S6]

Vegan and vegan-friendly coastal stays

Stay 01 · Vegan hotel and restaurant, as described by the operator

THE SLOW Vegan Hotel

Location: Mirissa beachfront
Best fit: independent travellers who want vegan dining on site

THE SLOW describes itself as a vegan design hotel and says its whole restaurant menu is vegan. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are offered, with choices spanning bowls, burgers and pasta. That makes the food proposition broader than a single vegan dish added to a conventional menu. [S1]

Its accommodation ranges from smaller rooms to two-bed formats and apartments with equipped kitchens. The operator says rooms face the ocean, while only some include a balcony or terrace. Match the precise category to your party instead of assuming every room offers apartment facilities. [S1]

For a longer beach stay, compare the room price with the meals you expect to buy. An entirely vegan restaurant is convenient, but it does not automatically make a room-only reservation half board. Ask whether breakfast belongs to your rate and how restaurant charges are handled.

Our suggested use is a flexible beach base: arrange the first meal around arrival, then leave room for independent days out. The vegan positioning is the operator’s own description, not our inspection of every furnishing or toiletry.

Food basis: an expressly vegan hotel concept and fully vegan restaurant menu. Confirm meal inclusions and the chosen room category.

Stay 02 · Residential retreat with vegan catering

Green Peace Inn

Location: Weligama
Best fit: a scheduled retreat rather than a short room-only stop

The published programme runs for eight days and seven nights. Its inclusions list seven plant-based brunches, seven vegan dinners and desserts, alongside afternoon fruit on six days. This is a concrete catering arrangement tied to the retreat, not an assumption that three conventional hotel meals are served daily. [S2]

Ahimsa Café’s own page identifies vegan brunch and dinner during retreats. It speaks of non-retreat dinner opening as a future plan, so this guide does not present the café as a confirmed walk-in restaurant operating throughout the year. [S3]

Check the available programme dates, shared or private room format, daily schedule and arrival requirements before committing. This option makes sense when the retreat itself is the reason for the stay. An independent itinerary with daily excursions may suit THE SLOW better.

Ask the organisers about any additional food you need between the scheduled services and what is provided on arrival and departure days. Optional treatments and practices are programme features; no medical or therapeutic benefit is claimed here.

Food basis: operator-published vegan retreat catering with specified meals. Book the programme and its dates, not an assumed ordinary hotel package.

Official-site exception: the linked product is a scheduled residential retreat. It is not represented as a Booking.com room offer.

Stay 03 · Plant-based breakfast · café also lists eggs

Sri Yoga Shala

Location: Metaramba, inland from Unawatuna
Best fit: a nightly stay combining accommodation with separately checked food and activities

The operator’s Bed, Breakfast, Yoga offer includes a plant-based breakfast at Café Durga and a drop-in yoga class. Rooms have private bathrooms and air conditioning or fans; the double and twin formats are described with balconies overlooking greenery. Confirm that the particular rate you book includes the advertised package. [S4]

Café Durga publishes useful plant-focused dishes, including a vegetable-and-hummus bowl, coconut-milk soup and garlic bread made with coconut oil. However, the same menu lists fried eggs and an omelette. Despite its plant-based heading, the café must not be described as entirely vegan. Specify the egg-free breakfast and ask about the complete preparation. [S5]

Compare the nightly stay with any longer retreat package rather than treating them as the same product. Ask which classes are included, what needs booking separately and whether lunch or dinner is available during your dates.

This is also the most important location distinction in the shortlist: the accommodation is inland. Plan beach outings and the return journey from the actual address, and discuss luggage access or stairs when relevant.

Food basis: published plant-based breakfast and named café dishes, with non-vegan items clearly acknowledged. Confirm your vegan selection; no whole-property vegan claim is made.

Compare the meals, not only the room

Three checks before reserving

Format: identify whether you are buying a hotel room, Bed–Breakfast–Yoga or an eight-day retreat.

Food: list the breakfast or brunch, dinner and extra meals you need. At Sri Yoga Shala, explicitly exclude eggs and other animal ingredients.

Inclusions: record meals, classes, transfers and supplements separately. A vegan kitchen does not determine the financial contents of a package.

A message for the host

We eat vegan, without meat, fish, dried fish, seafood, animal stock, dairy, ghee, butter, eggs or honey. Which meals does our chosen booking include? Please describe the vegan selection, serving times and any extra charges. Is this a room booking or a scheduled retreat, and what must we reserve separately?

A coast holiday with room to slow down

Our editorial suggestion is to choose one base for most of your coastal nights. Decide whether your priority is the beach, the retreat programme or an inland accommodation setting. That is more useful than changing hotels simply to collect all three destinations.

For an independent trip, keep the arrival evening straightforward and organise occasional outings from your chosen address. For Green Peace Inn, build the wider journey around the retreat dates rather than assuming the programme can be joined for any two nights.

Check travel times, seasonal opening and current beach conditions separately. This guide does not verify swimming safety, surf lessons or transport schedules. For a contrasting inland stay, continue with our Ella and Nuwara Eliya guide or the Sigiriya and Dambulla comparison.

Vegan south-coast stays: FAQ

Is there a vegan hotel in Mirissa?

THE SLOW describes itself as a vegan hotel and confirms that its whole restaurant menu is vegan. That statement is attributed to the operator; room categories and included meals still need checking. [S1]

Can Green Peace Inn be treated as an ordinary two-night hotel stay?

Not on the published offer used here. The featured product is an eight-day, seven-night retreat on scheduled dates. Check those dates and the complete programme before booking. [S2]

Is Café Durga entirely vegan?

No such claim is made. Its plant-based menu also lists eggs and an omelette. Ask for a specifically vegan meal rather than assuming every breakfast option is suitable. [S5]

Are all three properties directly on the beach?

No. THE SLOW and Green Peace Inn describe beachfront settings. Sri Yoga Shala is inland at Metaramba near Unawatuna. The title photograph shows regional scenery, not every property’s location. [S6]

Does a vegan retreat include three meals every day?

Check the actual schedule. Green Peace Inn lists brunch and dinner, plus fruit on specified days. Do not substitute an assumed breakfast–lunch–dinner arrangement for the published inclusions. [S2]

Does a hotel booking include surf lessons, yoga and transfers?

Only when the selected product expressly includes them. Confirm each activity and journey separately. A hotel’s name, beach location or yoga facilities do not establish the contents of every rate.

Research checked on . This is desk research, not our own inspection or a personal kitchen agreement. The collection distinguishes a vegan hotel, scheduled vegan catering and a plant-based café that also serves eggs. No therapeutic outcomes or universal meal inclusions are claimed.

Mirissa and Unawatuna feature prominently in SLTDA’s May 2025 analysis of anonymised mobile-network visitor activity from January–October 2024. That supports a south-coast editorial focus; it does not measure Google searches or establish a top-three ranking of holiday regions. The report uses one network provider and has coverage limitations. [S7]
