What “vegan-friendly” means in these guides

Austria includes a small number of genuinely vegan stays as well as vegetarian hotels and conventional properties with documented plant-based meals. These guides keep those categories separate instead of presenting every breakfast with oat milk as a vegan hotel.

A vegetarian dish is not automatically vegan, and a vegan breakfast does not guarantee a suitable dinner. Menus and kitchen procedures change, so strict dietary requirements, allergies and cross-contact questions should always be confirmed directly before arrival.

Every destination guide includes

  • Three carefully selected hotel stays
  • A clear vegan classification for every property
  • Breakfast and on-site dining evidence
  • Location, transport and trip-fit guidance
  • Property-specific sustainability information
  • Booking links or justified direct-booking options

Selected Austrian hotel highlights

Four established stays from the original Austria guide

The former country article profiled individual hotels in detail. These four remain useful starting points and also appear in the newer regional guides, where their current food provision is classified more conservatively.

Carinthia · plant-based kitchen

Haus 26 Weißbriach

A small Gitschtal stay whose published breakfasts and dinners are entirely plant-based. This describes the food programme rather than every material or facility at the property.

Carinthia · vegetarian with vegan choice

Strandhotel am Weissensee

A vegetarian lakeside hotel with an extensive documented vegan selection and a spa setting. It is not presented as a fully vegan property.

Vorarlberg · organic & vegan-friendly

Naturhotel Chesa Valisa

An organic Alpine wellness hotel with broad plant-based provision alongside a mixed food programme, plus documented environmental measures.

Salzkammergut · vegan-friendly wellness

DIE WASNERIN

A Bad Aussee wellness hotel with the most extensive daily vegan programme in the Salzkammergut shortlist, within a conventional mixed kitchen.

Match the route

Choose by the Austria trip you want

Austria’s best base depends on whether you want an urban break, a lake stay, a ski trip or a slower wellness retreat. Start with the route, then compare the guide that fits it.

CITY

Urban breaks

Vienna for the broadest city choice, Graz for a compact food-focused break and Linz for the Danube and modern culture.

LAKES

Lake & wellness

Salzkammergut and Carinthia for Alpine water, spa hotels, hiking and slower multi-night stays.

ALPS

High mountains

Tyrol and Vorarlberg for hiking, skiing, organic retreats and smaller Alpine villages.

SNOW

Ski & mountain towns

Salzburger Land for Leogang, Alpendorf and Kaprun, with documented vegan food beyond breakfast.

SPA

Wellness & green hills

Styria for an organic wellness package, Schladming access and a thermal-spa break in the south-east.

Classification method

Read the label before booking

Fully vegan

The accommodation and its regular food offer avoid animal-derived ingredients.

Vegetarian with vegan dishes

A vegetarian kitchen documents a meaningful vegan selection.

Vegan-friendly

A mixed hotel explicitly provides vegan breakfast or restaurant choices.

Vegan on request

Plant-based food depends on advance notice or current confirmation.

Before you travel

Turn the guide into a safe booking

1

Choose the right geography

Use a city guide for one urban base and a regional guide for mountains, lakes, resorts or smaller destinations.

2

Check the food evidence

Read whether vegan meals are regular, limited to breakfast or available only with advance notice.

3

Confirm before arrival

Ask about current menus, allergens, shared preparation and restaurant opening days before relying on the offer.

Austria hotel FAQ

Useful answers before you book

Are all hotels in these guides fully vegan?

No. Austria has a small number of stays with fully plant-based food, but most are vegetarian or mixed hotels with documented vegan choices. Every guide states the relevant classification.

Should I choose a city guide or a regional guide?

Choose Vienna, Graz or Linz for a focused urban stay. Use a regional guide for mountain, lake, ski or wellness trips outside those cities.

Does a Booking.com dietary label guarantee every meal?

No. A platform label is useful evidence, but it does not guarantee availability at every meal or protect against cross-contact. Confirm your exact needs with the property.

Does a vegan breakfast mean dinner is available?

No. Some Austrian hotels document only breakfast, while others offer half board, a vegan package or meals only by advance arrangement. Read the individual guide before choosing a rate.

When should I contact the hotel?

Contact the hotel before booking if vegan food is essential, and reconfirm shortly before arrival. Advance notice is especially important at small Alpine hotels and set-menu restaurants.

How current is the information?

Hotel food, location, booking and sustainability information was reviewed in August 2026. Menus, suppliers, packages, restaurant schedules and certifications can change.
