Colombia regional guide · Cartagena and Barú · reviewed 15 September 2026

Looking for vegan-friendly hotels in Cartagena and Barú? This guide compares a historic-city stay at Sofitel Legend Santa Clara with two coastal alternatives: Hotel Las Islas and Sofitel Barú Cartagena, also listed under the Calablanca name. Santa Clara and Las Islas publish vegan dining offers; the specific breakfast evidence for Calablanca comes from Booking.com. None is presented as an entirely vegan hotel. [C1] [C3] [C5]

Old-town nights or a coastal escape?

Choose Santa Clara for a San Diego base in Cartagena; compare Las Islas and Calablanca for Barú. Our recommendation is to decide which setting you will actually enjoy before comparing room offers. An old-town hotel and a coastal resort solve different travel needs. All three belong to an upscale shortlist, not a budget-to-luxury ranking. [C2] [C4] [C6]

Vegan-friendly describes the food evidence. A vegan menu or breakfast category does not certify every kitchen service, furnishing or toiletry. The two Barú properties are not city-centre hotels or a general recommendation for every Rosario Islands resort.

Three hotels at a glance

Where to stay: choose the experience first

San Diego, Cartagena

Santa Clara gives its address as Calle del Torno 39-29 in San Diego. Its Jardín restaurant is an identifiable place to discuss breakfast and other meals. Choose this base when you want the hotel to belong to the city part of your holiday, rather than expecting a beachfront resort experience. [C2]

Barú

Las Islas and Calablanca are the coastal alternatives in this selection. Calablanca lists its location at kilometre 7, Sector Portonao, Barú. Compare the exact property, arrival arrangements and meal package: the word Cartagena in a resort name does not make it interchangeable with an old-town hotel. [C4] [C6]

Vegan-friendly stays in Cartagena and Barú

Stay 01 · Direct operator dining evidence

Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena

Location: San Diego, Cartagena
Best fit: an upscale city stay with hotel dining arranged around your outings

Santa Clara's official food-and-beverage information explicitly says its restaurants offer vegetarian and vegan menu options. That is a useful hotel-wide dining statement, but not a declaration that the menus are entirely vegan. Its other food descriptions clearly include animal ingredients. [C1]

The separate Jardín page describes breakfast, lunch and dinner service. Use the venue name when asking what is available: request a complete vegan breakfast and the substantial main courses you could order later. The general vegan-options policy does not identify your exact meal, its preparation or its inclusion in a room rate. [C2]

Our suggestion is to book Santa Clara for the city hotel experience, then reserve the meals you expect to eat on site. Compare the specific room category and view instead of assuming that every room matches the same photograph. Keep restaurant reservations separate from the accommodation confirmation.

Evidence: an explicit operator vegan-options statement. Breakfast composition, serving venue and supplements still need confirmation.

Stay 02 · Published vegan menu · conventional coastal hotel

Hotel Las Islas

Location: Barú
Best fit: a coastal bungalow stay where dining is part of the hotel experience

Las Islas explicitly mentions a vegan menu in its official gastronomy feature. The same feature prominently describes seafood and other conventional dishes, so the offer is an alternative menu within mixed dining, not an exclusively plant-based kitchen. [C3]

The hotel's dining information identifies separate restaurant services and bungalow room service. Ask which venue provides the vegan selection, whether it is available for every meal you need and whether room service can use that menu. A vegan restaurant offer should not silently become a promise of vegan full board. [C4]

For a stay centred on the property, request two or three example mains rather than one adaptable side dish. That helps you judge whether the food will remain varied over several nights. Clarify drinks, breakfast and any meal-package limits before deciding which rate is the better value.

Compare the bungalow category, access and privacy separately from the food. Arrange the outward and return transfers before confirming restrictive cancellation terms. Our recommendation is to keep a coastal stay relaxed instead of making every day depend on travelling back into Cartagena.

Evidence: a vegan menu described by the hotel. The current dishes, serving arrangements and package inclusions are not personally confirmed.

Stay 03 · Platform-listed vegan breakfast

Sofitel Barú Cartagena / Calablanca

Location: Sector Portonao, Barú
Best fit: another coastal resort option with breakfast agreed before arrival

The matched Booking.com listing includes vegan breakfast. Its property address and Calablanca URL identify the Barú hotel, not Sofitel Legend Santa Clara in the city. The two Sofitel properties should therefore be compared as different bases, not as different room wings of one hotel. [C5]

Accor's breakfast page describes the Calablanca buffet but does not provide an itemised vegan meal. Its ordinary selection is mixed. For this guide, the explicit vegan-breakfast claim comes from Booking.com, while the operator page confirms the breakfast venue and location. [C6]

Ask for a filling breakfast with suitable breads, a substantial savoury option and a plant drink. Establish whether it needs advance preparation and whether it belongs to your selected rate. Discuss lunch and dinner independently rather than extending the platform's breakfast category to every restaurant.

Choose the room and resort facilities you will actually use, then compare the total with Las Islas. A coastal setting, a breakfast label and an attractive room photograph answer different questions; none alone establishes the complete holiday package.

Evidence: indexed Booking.com vegan-breakfast information, not a detailed operator vegan menu or an all-meal guarantee.

Build a city-and-coast holiday that works

Our suggested approach is to treat Cartagena and Barú as two possible parts of a trip. Spend the city portion at the city hotel, or choose a coastal base when time at the property is the priority. Splitting the stay can make sense when both experiences matter; it is not a requirement to book two hotels.

Agree transfer arrangements, arrival-day food and the return journey before adding excursions. A room booking does not reserve a boat trip, include every transfer or guarantee a vegan lunch supplied by another operator. Keep an outing's food arrangements separate from your hotel's breakfast promise.

These profiles do not provide live rates, journey times, sea conditions or excursion availability. Compare cancellation terms and the complete cost of the stay rather than the first nightly price displayed.

What to confirm before booking

Make the meal agreement specific

Request breakfast and substantial main courses without meat, fish, seafood, animal stock, dairy, butter, eggs or honey. Ask about sauces, bread and garnishes, and identify the restaurant serving each meal.

Keep the dishes, notice period and any supplement in writing. On a meal plan, request the choices available under that plan, not just a copy of the ordinary restaurant menu.

A message for the hotel

We eat vegan. Please describe a complete breakfast and two suitable main courses for our dates, without dairy, eggs, honey or animal stock. Which venue serves them? Are they included in our chosen room or meal package, and do you require advance notice?

Vegan-friendly Cartagena and Barú: FAQ

Are these three hotels completely vegan?

No. They are conventional hotels with published vegan options or a platform-listed breakfast category. The guide does not certify every kitchen service, room material or toiletry.

Which hotels publish their own vegan dining offer?

Santa Clara explicitly mentions vegan restaurant options, and Las Islas describes a vegan menu. These are narrower claims than entirely vegan hospitality. [C1] [C3]

Is Calablanca the same hotel as Santa Clara?

No. The Calablanca listing used here is Sofitel Barú Cartagena in Barú. Santa Clara is the San Diego city hotel. Check the address when comparing the two. [C2] [C5]

Does the vegan breakfast label include dinner?

No. Breakfast, restaurant dining and an included meal package may have different choices and conditions. Ask for dinner separately, particularly when most meals will be eaten at the resort.

Do these recommendations include every Rosario Islands hotel?

No. This is a focused comparison of one Cartagena city hotel and two Barú properties. It is not a directory of the whole island region.

Does the title photograph show one of the hotels?

No. It is archival Bocagrande scenery in Cartagena, not a Barú beach, a Santa Clara room view or a current photograph of resort facilities.
